WHY HAVING OPTIONS ARE SO IMPORTANT
I remember being in college and taking a multicultural communication course on how to understand how to interact with people from different cultures. I don’t remember much of what I did in that class, but I remember a statement my former professor said, “make sure you give yourself options in life”. Back then, the meaning of what he said wasn’t obvious to me, but after spending two years being an entrepreneur I realized what he way saying. What he meant was, allow yourself a number of possible scenarios in order to get what you want out of life.
The first step to creating more options that favor the results you want is understanding how to be a strategic thinker. You want to be an innovator who creates schemes and safeguards to handle unexpected outcomes on the way to reaching your goals. I am going to share a few things that I do in my personal life that I am certain will help you reach your goals more easily.
1. Accept the fact that things rarely go as planned.
This is the first step to getting yourself into the right frame of mind is understanding why having options is so important. I can tell you from my personal business experience that there have been plenty of times where we were certain of a business outcome and it never materialized. In the beginning, it was hard for me to deal with the disappointment until I became a more multifaceted person who anticipated how things could go wrong at a moment’s notice.
The next time you are for example applying for a new job, make sure you apply to more than just one, this way if the majority of employers don’t come back to you, maybe one or two positions will. This one of the best ways to avoid disappointments by eliminating expectations.
2. Develop more skills that you can monetize
One of the best ways to create more opportunities for yourself is by learning new skills that can help you in your business, job or personal life. The is an area all of us can work on, we can all be proactive in acquiring new skills. One of the best groups of people to study are children. Children are among the most creative group of people on earth because of their resourcefulness. If a child wants to reach the top of the shelf, he/she will try everything before they throw in the towel.
For you, it can be as simple as learning to be a better listener, as faster reader, a better researcher, a more sophisticated thinker. Having additional hard or soft skills will raise the likelihood of creating new opportunities for you to take advantage of. For example, what I do is try to read as many articles as I can on things like sales, persuasion and marketing to create more options for myself and our business. Try this yourself, and see what results you get.
3. Attend professional development seminars
Most people are going to have a problem with this recommendation because most people do not invest in themselves. The trick to the game of life is to work harder on yourself than you do at your job. I will tell you why this is true, you are paid for the value you provide, not the time you spend. This is the reason why some speakers charge $5,000 an hour, and others charge $50,000 an hour for a talk. Given that we agree that you are paid for the value you provide, the best thing you can do for yourself is to become as valuable as possible.
Going to seminars and workshops is one of the quickest ways to become a more valuable person because you are getting information that people spent months or even years acquiring in a few hours or days. The trade-off is negligible on your part. My advice to you is to find seminars that are taking place near you that you can attend to increase your self-worth in order to create new situations to benefit from.
