QUESTION, CAN YOU SELL ME THIS PEN?
Clearly, I can’t get you to literally sell me a pen. This question comes from a CNN interview that was posed to infamous Wall Street banker Jordan Belfort. His character was depicted by Leonardo di Caprio in the film, The Wolf of Wall street. Jordan Belfort was a masterful salesman. He was so good in fact that he earned a salary of about $50 million a year, so it’s safe to say that he knows a few things on how to get people to take action.
Your ability to sell is going to be a major determining factor of how successful you will ultimately be in life. The better you are at selling people on your ideas, getting your boss to give you a raise, getting your kids to make their beds or even convincing your partner to take you on your dream vacation, the happier will be in the long-run. So, I’m going to list a few benefits of being a great salesperson and how you can use them to begin to see results immediately.
1. No need to beg
One of the biggest reasons we find ourselves having to beg for the things we want is primarily because we can’t get it on our own, or we aren’t good enough at convincing others to get on our side. It took me some time to figure this concept out. In the past, whenever I wanted something, the first thought that came to my mind was, who can I ask to get me that thing that I needed. After I started to value the power of persuasion, I began to ask myself, how can I be resourceful enough to get what I want without having to beg others for help.
The reason I stopped begging other people for help was because my sales skills had improved. I became more confident in my abilities to raise money whenever I needed it. I learnt how to sell my products and services without having to beg people to get on board with me. Sales can liberate you if you take it seriously and understand all of the wonderful benefits it can give you.
2. Victim Mentality
I’ve discovered that one the quickest things that leads to a person developing a victim mentality is when you begin believing that you are a circumstance of life. A lot of people think that life happens to them. This is a dangerous mental place to be in, and I should know because I use to be there. Thinking like this can significantly hinder your ability to act and take matters into your hands. But here is the flip-side.
If you start to become better at selling and persuasion, you will quickly discover that you are in control of your life because you will begin to believe that you can make things happen in your favor. Great salespeople understand that every NO that they hear is a signal that they are moving in the right direction. They don’t get discouraged very easily. They don’t take rejection personally. They understand that every time they go through some level of failure, it creates an opportunity to learn and get better.
The better you are at handling objections, the more successful you will be in life because people are going to say no to you, a lot. Your goal should be to begin to turn these objections into maybes and maybes into yes!
3. It’s a numbers game
Finally, every great salesperson or influencer understands that life is just one big numbers game. Here’s an example of what I mean. I was recently at a train station, on my way to a seminar my company and I was conducting in Milan when I spotted a nice young lady working at a coffee shop. At that moment, I had a decision to make, do I simply admire her while I wait for my train and ultimately miss the opportunity, or simply play the numbers game and go introduce myself. I decided to play the numbers game. I introduced myself to her, however she wasn’t interested, maybe it was too early in the morning to be approached, who knows. I didn’t focus on that.
Now, what’s the take away here? The point is not that I got rejected because remember, rejection is a part of the numbers game. The point instead is that I felt confident enough in my ability to sell myself to approach her in the first place. I wasn’t afraid to act, I didn’t doubt myself. I believed that I had what it took to succeed. Now here is the kicker, regardless if she said yes or no, I still won.
Here’s why, the moment I decided to act, I became the winner. Life rewards those who are bold enough to act. When you develop your ability to sell and persuade, life will become one big numbers game that you will understand how to play.
Go out there and start playing this game and get better at it every single day!
