INSPIRATION NEVER PAID THE BILLS
Saying something like, “inspiration is crap” may be controversial, but I have found this to be true from countless experiences I have had and seen. Nowadays it is very popular to throw words like, motivation, inspiration, “beast mode” and hustler around, and simply expect that by saying these things it will somehow make you a successful person. The reality is that success achieved in any field requires, vision, commitment, determination, research, strong work ethic and execution.
The reason for me writing this article is to dispel the concept that inspiration is all you need to be successful. I am here to tell you that inspiration and motivation comes and goes; discipline is what really sets people apart. I am going to share some things that I have learned in my life that you can start doing right now to see tangible results in your life.
It is very important to understand that motivation is a feeling, and that’s all it is. It is an emotion that encourages us to make decisions; but here is the kicker, being demotivated is also a feeling. This simply means that if you are relying on your level of motivation to make progress, you are in trouble. I have listened to a plethora of motivational speakers who will make you feel like jumping out of a plane because of how pumped up you are, but that feeling usually goes away when reality sets it.
When you realize that the majority of the things you will need to do to be successful are mundane, you will most likely feel deflated. The reason for this is because we generally only feel motivated to do the things that are easy.
The trick is to understand that motivation is not enough for achievement. For example, I didn’t really feel motivated to write this article that you are currently reading, however I decided that I will write articles regardless of how I feel because of the benefits some people may get from reading them. The take away here is that, it not your job to get yourself motivated, it is your job to make sure that you are getting things done.
After coming to the realization that your level of motivation is not a determinant of success, the next step is to focus on spending time learning things that will actually help you become more valuable.
The more information you have, the better your chances are of succeeding because you will be able to create more opportunities for yourself.
Here is the practical application of what I mean, if you learn how to be an ice cream maker, you can very well open and ice cream shop and sell ice cream and make a decent living. But if you also decide how to learn how to market your ice cream shop online, then you can drive more traffic to your store. Now you have become twice as successful. You can then decide to learn about franchising, and before you know it, you are running two or three stores.
Those results did not come from a place of being motivated, they came from your willingness to learn and work harder than the guy or girl who was content with just one store. Finally, your ability to act on the dreams and goals that you have is what really matters.
